Awakening Song

Entire orchard taste: a small ways off

from mouth foam. He’ll scoff,

she doesn’t know sweet like this, can’t gnaw

on fruit like this: such a flesh whisper, raw

innards to skin peel. Rife with seed.

Apron string like stem, ripe weed

twirl, slope down the core: black side

and in. Chafe. Lips bruise, abide

about the neck like rubies, so fresh

& swollen. Who could have such a flesh

appetite? The crunch and chew

that follow drool from origin of ew.

When she cuts a Red Delicious horizontally,

the star core gazes, waxing her fun.

Squeeze. Pome so plump with sweat—

taste unwritten. Lip bruise treat

lingers long past sugar blossom. Buds

of her tongue know granule like studs

know the ear. They’re pointing at her:

head and heel. A whistle ache from her

throat. The dry follows briars ground

to powder. Wipe it across the sound

of her voice. She doesn’t yield to seed-set

diamonds in his mouth. Shimmery wet

scales, a reflection of windows from roof

collapse. There is pollen on her chin. Poof!

With one huff, she labors to her knees,

leaving the belly trail of pleas—

In her calm, she tore into sands of the sea,

craving salt from a different flesh.
